How to Cook a Turkey Burger Thoroughly

Burgers can be made using turkey meat.

Turkey burgers are an alternative to burgers made with beef. They are healthier due to turkey meat's lower fat content and provide a different taste to a burger sandwich. Forming and cooking turkey burgers is done much the same way as with their beef counterparts with one exception, which is temperature. Beef burgers can be cooked to varying levels of doneness, but turkey burgers must be cooked all the way. A way to make sure turkey burgers are thoroughly cooked is to use a food thermometer.

Step 1

Prepare the burgers with desired ingredients by mixing all ingredients in a bowl. Form the patties with your hands. You can form the patties in between two sheets of plastic wrap for less of a mess.

Step 2

Heat the cooking source. If using a stove, spray cooking oil or coat the pan with vegetable oil and place over medium-high heat. If using a grill, start the grill and brush the grill with cooking oil so the meat will not stick.

Step 3

Place the burgers onto the pan or grill and let cook for 5 minutes before flipping, which should be done only once. After another 5 minutes, use a food thermometer to check the burgers by inserting the needle halfway into the burgers. The thermometer should read 165 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the temperature of cooked turkey.
