If weather, location or the fact that you don't own a grill is keeping you from cooking steak, you can cook the meat from the convenience of your kitchen on an electric skillet. The meat will not have the grill lines that may leave the steak aesthetically pleasing, but the skillet can still cook your food thoroughly. Cooking a steak to medium-well takes some timing as well as an accurate meat thermometer.

Step 1

Preheat the skillet to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, as you want to make sure that the skillet is hot so that your steak will sear. Toss a few droplets of water onto the skillet and if they sizzle and bead, the skillet is hot enough for cooking.

Step 2

Season both sides of the steak while the skillet is preheating, and then place the steak on the skillet when the skillet is hot. Many people like using pre-made steak seasonings, while some people prefer just a little salt and pepper. Cover the skillet so that the fat from the steak does not spatter, leaving a corner open so air can circulate.

Step 3

Cook one side of the steak until it has a nice dark sear. For a 1-inch thick steak, you should cook it for approximately seven minutes.

Step 4

Flip the steak with a pair of tongs. Reduce the heat to 300 F and brown the other side with the cover ajar for about six minutes or until it reaches the desired doneness. The internal temperature of a medium-well steak should be between 150 and 155 F on an internal meat thermometer.

Things You'll Need

  • Seasonings, optional

  • Tongs

  • Meat thermometer

Tip

Coat the skillet with a nonstick spray if you want, but the fat and juices from the skillet should serve the same function.
