Malibu rum is a Caribbean rum mixed with coconut liqueur. This means that it's not pure rum and has more carbohydrates than the average rum-based spirit. There are no other macronutrients in Malibu rum, which means that it has very little nutritional value. Like other alcoholic beverages, Malibu rum should be consumed in limited amounts.

Malibu Drinks and Malibu Rum
Malibu is a company that is best known for producing Malibu rum, a rum infused with coconut liqueur. Malibu is part of Pernod Ricard, the second-largest company in the spirits industry, which also owns beverages like Ballantine, Glenlivet, Chivas Regal whiskey, Absolut vodka and Beefeater gin. Malibu also produces a variety of other beverages other than its signature coconut rum. All drinks produced by Malibu are infused with coconut liqueur or coconut flavoring but may also contain other flavors, too. According to the Malibu website, Malibu drinks currently produced include:
- Malibu Beer
- Malibu Fizzy Mango
- Malibu Pineapple
- Malibu Pineapple Rum
- Malibu Passion Fruit Rum
- Malibu Mango Rum
- Malibu Tropical Banana Rum
- Malibu
With the exception of Malibu Beer, all of these are rum-based drinks. Depending on the country you live in, you may also be able to find a variety of other drinks, like spiced rum, rum and cola mixed drinks and other flavors. Across the board, Malibu rum has carbohydrates and calories and no other macronutrients or nutrients.
Malibu's alcohol content differs substantially between products. Rum and liqueur blends are 21 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) in the United States. However, they may have a lower ABV of 18 percent or a higher ABV of 24 percent in other countries. Most mixed drinks and beer are 4 percent or 5 percent ABV, but other pre-prepared Malibu beverages may range between 11 and 12.5 percent ABV. Finally, you can also find stronger Malibu rum products (Malibu Island Spiced, Red and Black) sold in North America, South Africa and the European Union. These products range between 30 and 35 percent ABV.
Malibu Rum Nutrition Information
One serving of Malibu rum is 1.7 ounces or 50 milliliters and contains 8.3 grams of alcohol. This typically means you can get 14 or 15 servings per bottle. Malibu rum's calories differ depending on the product. Each serving of original Malibu rum is 100 calories. However, Malibu Tropical Banana rum has 94 calories, Malibu Passion Fruit rum has 87 calories, Malibu Mango rum has 86 calories and Malibu Pineapple rum has 84 calories.
The carbs in Malibu coconut rum also differ between products. In each serving of original Malibu rum, you can obtain 11 grams of carbohydrates. However, Malibu Tropical Banana rum has 9 grams of carbohydrates and the remaining three products, Malibu Passion Fruit rum, Malibu Mango rum and Malibu Pineapple rum all have 7 grams of carbohydrates per serving. In all of these products, all carbohydrates come from sugars.
Malibu rum ingredients aren't listed on its website, but coconut is listed as an allergen on many of their products, as is milk. This means that certain products may also have carbohydrates that come from natural sources, rather than just flavorings.
Comparatively, a 50-milliliter serving of Bacardi rum superior, one of the most popularly consumed rums in the United States, has no carbohydrates, fat or protein at all. However, it still contains calories — about 110 calories per 50 milliliters. However, due to the higher alcohol content (40 percent ABV), Bacardi lists the recommended serving size as 44 milliliters (1.5 ounces), which means there are 98 calories per serving.
Ultimately, this means that there are roughly the same amount of calories in sweetened, coconut-flavored Malibu rum and a standard 40-percent ABV rum drink.
Alcohol Consumption and Your Health
All alcoholic beverages have calories, since alcohol has 7.1 calories per gram. Most alcoholic drinks contain both calories and carbohydrates, which means that they can greatly impact your diet. In fact, a single, mixed drink can have as much as 4,188 calories. Given that most people consume about 2,000 calories each day, this means that you can easily consume hundreds or even thousands of calories in alcoholic drinks alone. These drinks typically have almost no nutritional value and are often filled with excessive amounts of sugar. Many of these sugars are added sugars, rather than natural sugars, which should be limited to 10 percent of your daily calories or less.
While most distilled alcohol has between 97 and 116 calories per 45-milliliter serving, liqueurs generally have more calories, with around 160 to 186 calories per serving. Drinks like beer can be much more variable, with calories that usually range between 103 and 350 per 12 ounces. Mixed drinks, which tend to contain sugar-rich beverages like soft drinks, have the most calories. While an 8-ounce rum and coke has 185 calories, hot buttered rum has 292 calories, a pina colada has 526 calories and a chocolate martini has 4,188 calories. If you had four pina coladas in one sitting, you'd already have met your caloric intake for the day.

According to a March 2015 study in the Current Obesity Reports journal, if you're trying to lose weight and enjoy drinking, you should be conscious of your alcohol intake. As long as you stay away from sugary, calorific, carbohydrate-rich drinks like pina coladas and chocolate martinis, drinking small or moderate amounts of alcohol likely won't affect your weight gain. However, binge drinking and other forms of heavy drinking can increase your body fat, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI) and risk of having overweight or obesity. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend consuming alcohol in moderation if you choose to drink. Moderate alcohol consumption is considered about one drink per day for women and about two drinks per day for men.
