Phentermine (duromine) is a prescription dietary aid intended for short term use by people who have overweight or obesity, according to the Mayo Clinic. Duromine is meant to be used in combination with physical activity and a medically supervised weight loss plan. Phentermine curbs hunger by directly impacting the part of the brain that's in charge of your appetite.

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) duromine is generally taken for about one month but the length of treatment can vary. Since it is possible to become dependent on duromine, the medication should not be taken for longer than the prescribed time and only in the recommended dosage.

Types

Phentermine is available in both tablets and extended-release (long-acting) capsules. Some tablets can be broken up and blended in with food but the extended release pill should not be squashed or eaten.

Dosage

According to the NIH, duromine capsules can be taken once a day either prior to eating breakfast or within two hours afterward. A morning dosage is recommended since duromine may increase energy and cause sleeplessness. Drink a full glass of water when taking the capsule. Duromine tablets are taken about a half hour before meals three times daily. Your doctor will prescribe 15mg, 30mg, or 45 mg tablets. People with diabetes may need to increase their insulin dosage during the time they are taking phentermine.

Prevention

The NIH suggests that you plan to take phentermine around mealtime to avoid side effects that may include constipation, dry mouth, headaches, lightheadedness, irritability and blurred vision.

Precautions

Duromine is not recommended for people with high blood pressure, heart disease or an overactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). People with mental health issues including anorexia nervosa (loss of appetite) and depression should not take phentermine. Notify your doctor if you think you are pregnant, intend to become pregnant or plan to breastfeed during the time you will be treated with phentermine.
