Ozone is a colorless, odorless gas that has several benefits when used in ozone therapy or ozonated water. Ozonated water can help with disease prevention. This type of water can also help treat inflammation, and protect against infections, particularly those stemming from dental procedures.

A study published in Biomedical Reports in September 2014 investigated the effects of ozonated water on acute inflammation in mice. The researchers found that the ozonated water helped reduce inflammation by decreasing factors that increase inflammation, and by promoting the body's natural antioxidants. The results of the study suggest that ozonated water may have anti-inflammatory properties that may benefit people with chronic inflammation.

Though this study is promising, more research is needed to fully determine how effective ozonated water is for treating inflammation in humans. To date, there has been no further research into these findings published. However, if you are interested in reducing inflammation naturally, there are foods that may help you reduce inflammation, such as ginger and bananas.

You can take other steps to reduce inflammation as well. For example, getting enough sleep and exercise can help you reduce inflammation in your body. Additionally, reducing stress, avoiding inflammatory foods and maintaining a healthy weight can also help you avoid inflammation.

Ozonated Water and Food Safety

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 48 million people in the United States contract a foodborne illness each year. Of those, 128,000 are hospitalized for foodborne illnesses and 3,000 people die. Foodborne illnesses, or food poisoning, can cause symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea and fever.

Produce is a potential source of bacteria, which is why it's important that you wash fruits and veggies before you eat them, even products that appear ready-to-eat, such as bagged lettuce. In fact, the CDC reports that produce accounts for about 46 percent of all foodborne illness cases.

According to an article published in the Journal of Food Science in March 2014, washing produce in ozonated water it may help reduce the amount of bacteria found on the produce. By washing produce in ozonated water, you may be able to reduce the risk of infection, specifically salmonella, from fruits and vegetables such as lettuce, green onions and grape tomatoes.

Ozonated Water and Cancer

Ozone therapy may help with the treatment of cancer. More important, ozonated water may help with controlling the growth of your tumor(s) if you already have cancer.

According to research published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences in October 2015, ozonated water had an anti-tumor effect when used in vivo. The study shows that ozonated water may be able to replace ozone therapy for cancer because, unlike the gas form, ozonated water is stable, easy to transport and has minimal side effects. Further studies are needed to fully support these findings, but this study does show some promise for helping to treat cancer.

If you are undergoing cancer treatment, talk to your doctor before trying to self-treat your cancer with ozonated water or other foods. While it may be helpful, you should follow a treatment plan developed with your doctor.

Ozonated Water and Dental Procedures

Ozone water is useful in several dental procedures. Similar to its helpful effects preventing foodborne illnesses, the antimicrobial and analgesic properties of ozone water can help prevent infection during dental procedures.

A review of studies published in the Saudi Journal for Dental Research in the January-July 2017 issue, says that there are several potential benefits to using ozone water in dental procedures. Some of the benefits include:

  • Preventing oral infections
  • Helping tissues in the mouth heal from a wound or after surgery
  • Treating lesions
  • Preventing bacterial growth in the mouth
  • Preventing infection during surgery

The Kentucky Dental Association (KDA) affirms several of these findings and indicates that dental practices are currently using ozone treatment to help prevent viral, bacterial or fungal infections when treating patients.

According to the KDA, the current use of ozone water in American dental offices for prevention and protection against infection is a safe way to irrigate periodontics and endodontics. The KDA also says that ozone treatment is used for harder-to-reach areas that ozonated water cannot easily access.
