People who take the blood thinner warfarin, also called Coumadin, need to eat a consistent amount of vitamin K each day because this drug works by interfering with the blood-clotting action of vitamin K. Understanding which foods are vitamin K-free can help you plan your diet so you get the recommended amount of vitamin K while keeping your vitamin-K intake consistent.
Meat, Seafood and Dairy Foods
Video of the Day
Most meat, poultry and seafood options are vitamin K-free or low in vitamin K. Pork doesn't contain vitamin K, except for certain types of ham, which contain just trace amounts. A 3-ounce portion of beef round trimmed to remove all the fat and beef tripe, kidneys, heart and brains are also vitamin K-free. Seafood choices for those trying to avoid vitamin K include scallops, halibut, rockfish, lobster, eel and tuna. Egg whites are also vitamin K-free, as are skim milk, nonfat yogurt, 2 percent cottage cheese, fat-free ice cream, reduced-fat American cheese and fat-free cream cheese.

Grain Products
Grain products also tend to be low in vitamin K. Some that don't contain any vitamin K include cornmeal, egg noodles, quinoa, rice, spaghetti, macaroni, English muffins and corn tortillas. This is for the typical serving size of 1 cup cooked for grains, or 1 ounce of English muffins or tortillas. Larger portions may contain small amounts of vitamin K.
Fruits and Vegetables
Good vegetables to include in your diet when watching your vitamin K levels include bamboo shoots, portobello mushrooms, white mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms and corn. Oranges and orange juice, starfruit, apple juice and lemons are fruit choices that don't contain vitamin K. While grapefruit doesn't have any vitamin K, it can interfere with certain medications and should be avoided if you're taking warfarin.
Other Foods
Almonds, coconut, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, peanuts, Brazil nuts and macadamia nuts can make good snacks for people trying to avoid vitamin K. You can also include vanilla extract, nutmeg, caraway seeds, chicken or beef broth, soy sauce, ginger and garlic powder in your diet without increasing your vitamin K intake. Vitamin K-free beverages include water, soy milk, wine, chamomile tea and other herbal teas, soda, energy drinks, gin, beer and coffee.
