Non-alcoholic wine may still have very small amounts of alcohol. Read the product label on your wine for the exact amount of alcohol in it, especially if you’re trying to avoid alcohol completely.

The Best Non-Alcoholic Wines

What Is Non-Alcoholic Wine?

As the name suggests, non-alcoholic wine is wine that contains little to no alcohol. It comes in many of the same flavors and varieties as regular wine, just without as much alcohol.

Non-Alcoholic vs. Alcohol-Free

Yes — non-alcoholic wine may still contain some alcohol. To be considered "non-alcoholic," wine and other beverages must have 0.5 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) or below, per the FDA. Alcohol-free products, on the other hand, must contain no detectable levels of alcohol

The best way to know what you're buying is to read your product labels carefully, especially if you're pregnant or otherwise trying to avoid alcohol altogether.

How Is Non-Alcoholic Wine Made?

Many people think non-alcoholic wine is just grape juice that hasn't been processed into wine, but that's actually not true.

Non-alcoholic wine is made in the same way that regular wine with alcohol is made. The major difference is that the alcohol is removed as an additional step in the manufacturing process, according to Hope Family Wines.

To make non-alcoholic wine, grape juice goes through a vinification (or fermentation) process, which produces wine with alcohol. After, the alcohol is removed from the wine, typically by vacuum distillation, a process in which the wine is heated to almost boiling and the alcohol evaporates.

When wine is made as usual and the alcohol is removed, it will have less of a "grape juice" taste, and you'll still feel like you're drinking wine, says Wine sommelier Samantha Capaldi.

Things to Consider Before Buying Non-Alcoholic Wine

With so many non-alcoholic wines on the market nowadays, finding the one that best suits your taste buds may seem challenging. There are some factors to consider when you're deciding on which to choose:

Your Preferences

Choosing wine, whether it has alcohol or not, can be tricky. You must consider your own personal preferences, for example, whether you prefer sparkling or flat, chilled or room-temperature, white wine, red wine or a refreshing rosé.

Dry wines have less sugar than sweet wines, and usually have a taste that's more tart.

The Taste

One important factor in choosing the best non-alcoholic wine is whether or not you prefer the beverage to taste like the real thing or not.

Some people buy non-alcoholic wine to mimic the taste of real wine, while others simply want a non-alcoholic option that doesn't necessarily have the same exact taste.

Non-alcoholic wines that have been dealcoholized will taste more like real wine, while there are some that are made with (unfermented) grape juice with other ingredients added for flavor. Choose one based on your personal preferences.

Sugar and Calories

The fact that non-alcoholic wine doesn't have much alcohol doesn't automatically make it healthy. Many non-alcoholic wine options can be high in sugar and add calories to your diet, so be sure to take the nutritionals into account before you buy and pour.

How We Chose

With the sober curious movement on the rise, Capaldi says it's been important to her business that she try and offer non-alcoholic wine options to her clients. "Being a sommelier and finding or even accepting a non-alcoholic wine can be a challenge. But non-alcoholic wines are here to stay for a very good reason."

So, she's tried non-alcoholic wines of all types and varieties and shared her experience with us. In addition to her input, we consulted reviews from real people and put it all together to come up with our list of the best non-alcoholic wines based on the following criteria:
