Eating raw cookie dough may bring back memories of licking the wooden spoon when you were a kid to mind.

And while that creamy sweet taste is definitely like no other, if eaten in large quantities, uncooked ingredients in raw cookie dough can have harmful implications, according to Kelsey Lorencz, RDN. "Unpasteurized eggs inside traditional cookie dough that haven't been cooked could carry salmonella, which can cause serious side effects like cramps, diarrhea, fever and vomiting."

Look Out for Added Sugar

To choose an edible cookie dough, start by looking for one that has minimally processed ingredients and is lower in added sugar, suggests Cartlidge. "Even the so-called 'healthy' cookie doughs can become less nutritious if they're full of added sugar, including sugar from 'natural sources' such as coconut sugar and maple syrup."

Watch Out for Saturated Fat and Sodium

Also worth being mindful of is the saturated fat in edible cookie dough, which can quickly add up if the product has a lot of butter or coconut oil. "You'll also want to keep sodium levels in check, so look for an edible cookie dough that has 5 percent daily value or less per serving of sodium on the nutrition label," she explains.

Warning

Cartlidge says you should always look for a cookie dough product that has ingredients that are safe to eat raw. “It should consist of a heat-treated flour or flour that can safely be eaten raw such as almond flour, pasteurized eggs, or no eggs at all,” she says.

Watch for Portion Sizes

Above all, be mindful of portion sizes, as "it can be easy to overdo it if you're not paying close attention to how much you're eating," Cartlidge adds. "Many of these edible cookie doughs can be high in calories, so your best bet is always to measure out a small portion."
